Lithuania broke open a close game in the third quarter on their way to a 76-68 win over Great Britain in Group A of EuroBasket Women qualifying on Saturday.

Sandra Valuzyte had 24 points and four rebounds to lead the Baltic giants, who are now in first place at 5-2 over idle Israel (5-1).

The game was knotted at 42-42 early in the third quarter when two Valuzyte free throws started a 13-0 run for the Lithuanians.

They ended up outscoring the Britons 20-6 in the frame for a 60-46 advantage and stayed comfortably on top the rest of the way.

Kimberley Butler finished with 18 points and 10 boards to lead Great Britain, who slumped to 1-6.

The Brits take on Germany in midweek while Ukraine face Israel.

Lithuania, who did a lot of their damage at the free throw line against Britain by making 24 of 30 (80%), will not play again until next weekend against Germany.

    Rutenis Paulauskas, Lithuania coach:

"Playing good defense was crucial in this game. Great Britain, despite of all the stereotypes, is a very strong team which has made a great progress. So we had to play our best game which we did. We still have one game to go and we have to win that one."

    Mark Clark, Great Britain coach:

"That was a much improved performance by us. Lithuania is probably the best team in the group, so I'm glad we kept fighting for two quarters. In the third quarter we struggled in offense which made the difference."
