Bulgaria finished bottom of EuroBasket Women 2009 qualifying Group D but they went out with a 75-68 upset of Serbia on Saturday, a result that may help them avoid having to play in the Relegation Round.

Serbia had needed to win over Bulgaria to assure themselves of a second-place finish that would guarantee a place in next year's Final Round in Latvia.

Now they need Greece to do them a favour and beat Belgium on Saturday, or the Belgians will leapfrog the Serbians into second place.

The Bulgarians took the lead for good midway through the third quarter when Ivelina Vrantcheva and Tanya Chirov hit back-to-back three-pointers for a 48-42 advantage.

Vrantcheva scored all 15 of her points with shots from behind the arc.

Chirov also hit five three-balls in the game and finished with 21 points.

Miljana Musovic scored 14 points to lead Serbia, who hurt their cause at the free throw line by making just six of 12.

    Nikolay Boroukov, Bulgaria coach:

"I congratulated the girls after the game because they fought hard for the win. It is not easy at all to come back with a win after four consecutive losses. Today we played with more concentration; we made fewer mistakes, had higher percentage under the basket and this won usĀ  the victory against an excellent Serbian team."
