| 07 June 2009Latvia electrified their home crowd with a big performance against Poland in the last game of the opening day of EuroBasket Women action in Liepaja.
Riding the strong first-half performances of Anete Jekabsone-Zogota, Gunta Basko and Zane Tamane and a suffocating defense, the Baltic side stormed to an 86-52 victory.
With every steal, fast-break and made shot triggering standing ovations and the beating of drums from the passionate fans wearing red and white inside the packed Liepaja Olympic Center, the Latvians showed they will be a force to be reckoned with over the next fortnight.
Ainars Zvirgzdins' team stormed into a 12-1 lead midway through the opening quarter and never looked back.
In that opening burst of points, Tamane scored six and 2007 FIBA Europe Women's Player of the Year Jekabsone-Zogota poured in four.
"The crowd was fantastic," said Jekabsone-Zogota, who finished with a game-high 20 points on nine of 16 shooting from the floor.
"It made the hairs on your arms stand on end.
"At no EuroBasket that we have played in before have I ever seen a team get the kind of support that we had tonight."
With five minutes still remaining in the first half, Latvia were in complete command at 36-16.
Basko had nine of her 18 points before the intermission.
Poland made a desperate attempt to get back into the game but Latvia put the defensive clamps on them whenever they tried to get the ball anywhere near the basket to center Ewelina Kobryn.
The Poles ended up shooting just 28% from the field in the first half, including eight of 26 inside the arc.
A bad night got even worse early in the third quarter when Poland lost their superstar Agnieszka Bibrzycka to a badly sprained left ankle.
The injury could end up knocking her out for the rest of the tournament.
The UMMC Ekaterinburg ace was helped to the sideline before having ice taped to her ankle to keep the swelling down.
With her left foot elevated, Bibrzycka had to remain on her back on the court while listening to fans beat Latvian drums in the stands as the home side blew her team out.
Latvia put on an incredible performance, especially when considering they don't have Ieva Kublina.
The veteran power forward is out of the tournament after failing to recover from a sprained ankle.
This much is certain.
Latvia have the fan support, and experience gained from the last two years that make them tough to beat.
They reached the Semi-Finals at the EuroBasket in Chieti and Latvia also competed at the Olympics for the first time.
"We've been playing together for many years, this team," Jekabsone-Zogota said, "and it's very easy for us when we are coming together from our club teams. "
Greece and Hungary now face the unenviable task of going up against the Latvians in Liepaja.

That's obvious for the fans who have travelled to Liepaja to watch Group A and Group B games at the EuroBasket Women. The coastal city has billboards donning photographs of Latvia stars Anete Jekabsone-Zogota and Gunta Basko to promote the event which takes place every two years. Latvia coach Ainars Zvirgzdins will have both players in his squad as they try to improve on their Semi-Final appearance of two years ago, starting with Sunday's game against Poland.  | | It will be Agnieszka Bibrzycka job to ruin the opener for the hosts. |
Zvirgzdins waited as long as he could for veteran Ieva Kublina to recover from the ankle injury she picked up while playing for Prague earlier this year but the veteran forward ran out of time. That means a prominent figure in the Latvia teams that won the hearts fans in Chieti, Italy, in 2007 will not be in uniform this summer. While there is no Kublina, there will be Sabine Niedola. The 1.84m forward, who put up very impressive numbers last summer (17.8 points and 14.3 rebounds per game) at the U20 European Championship for Women, has made the Latvia squad and could make her EuroBasket bow in front of her hometown fans. The core of the Latvia group that reached the Semi-Finals at the EuroBasket two years ago and competed at last year's Olympics will play for the country. That includes Liene Jansone, the hard-working forward who had a frustrating year at Gambrinus Sika Brno but moved to Tarbes in France and finished the season in style by reaching the French domestic play-off finals. Veteran Ieva Tare of SK Cesis is a steadying influence for the national team and should be more influential than last year in Beijing when an elbow injury limited her effectiveness. Poland will be eager to play in the EuroBasket after failing to qualify for the 2007 event. Missing the EuroBasket Women in 2007 was a huge disappointment for a country that won the European title 10 years ago. The Poles won seven of their eight qualifying games last year. Last time out: Poland put an exclamation point on their EuroBasket Women qualifying campaign with a 91-45 demolition of Bosnia and Herzegovina while Latvia bowed out of the Olympics after a 72-68 defeat to Korea. The feel-good factor returned for the Latvians when they won all six of their warm-up games for the EuroBasket Women. Key match-up: Poland center Ewelina Kobryn averaged more than 10 points and seven rebounds in qualifying and has logged big minutes in the EuroLeague Women with Wisla Can-Pack Krakow. The 27-year-old will go toe-to-toe with Zane Tamane of Latvia in the low post. X-Factor: Poland's Agnieszka Bibrzycka will be arguably the best player on the court. She will face the challenges of playing in front of a hostile crowd, and making a big contribution while also getting her teammates involved. Stats: Poland had 111 assists but turned the ball over 132 times in last year's qualifying campaign for the EuroBasket Women.
