    Czechs To Soon Appoint Women’s Coach; Men’s Job Vacant

    The Czech Republic expect to appoint a coach for their women's team by October 19, when the country's basketball federation holds a board meeting.

    Women's team boss Milan Veverka and his staff were let go in August, leaving the host nation for next year's FIBA World Championship for Women with  hugely important positions to fill.

    Iceland No Match As Montenegro Make It Ten In A Row

    Montenegro rolled to their 10th straight victory in EuroBasket Women Division B with a 77-62 win at Iceland on Saturday.

    Jelena Skerovic had 13 points to lead the Montenegrins, who stormed out to a 19-8 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back.

    Sweden and Portugal have claimed the top two spots in the B Group of the EuroBasket Women Division B while Montenegro have clinched first place in the A Group.

    The fourth side to make the play-offs has yet to be decided with both the Netherlands and Ireland in contention for second spot in the A Group.

    Dutch Keep The Heat On Montenegro

    The Netherlands, Montenegro and Ireland all recorded victories in Group A of EuroBasket Women Division B on Wednesday while Portugal prevailed in their Group B game.

    The Dutch got 15 points and eight rebounds from Leonie Kooij and thrashed Iceland, 70-51.

    Ireland Lose Heartbreaker Against Montenegro

    Ireland's Senior Women suffered a heartbreaking 70-67 loss to Montenegro in their European qualifier in front of a full house at the National Basketball Arena on Saturday.

    Mark Scannall's charges were more than a match for their Division B opponents and lead for the majority of the contest. However, a late surge from the visitor's ensured a cruel defeat for the ‘girls in green'.

    Deja Vu, France Top Russia Again For Gold

    France held on against never-say-die Russia to win the gold medal at the EuroBasket Women on Saturday night in Latvia.

    After the disappointment of an eighth-place finish in 2007, Pierre Vincent's team capped a remarkable comeback to the top of Europe with a 57-53 win over Russia in the championship game.

    Gruda, Dumerc Highlight All-Tournament Team

    The 2009 EuroBasket Women champions Sandrine Gruda and Celine Dumerc of France headed the All-Tournament Team in Riga along with Most Valuable Player winner Evanthia Maltsi of Greece.

    Gruda led the champions France in scoring (15.4 ppg) and rebounding (7.7 rpg) while shooting 50 percent from the field.

    Maltsi Wins MVP

    Greece forward Evanthia Maltsi was selected as the Most Valuable Player of EuroBasket Women 2009 after leading the Greeks to fifth place and their first-ever berth at the World Championship.

    Maltsi led the tournament in scoring with 22.6 points per game as well as steals (3.1) and free throw percentage (91 percent) while averaging 4.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists and shooting 40 percent from three-point range.

    Spain beat a brave Belarus 63-56 and took third place in EuroBasket Women 2009 for the fourth time this decade, having already claimed the bronze in the 2001, 2003, and 2005 championships.


    The game was defined by an early Spanish run that put Evaristo Pérez's squad ahead 27-8 in the second quarter.

    Evanthia Maltsi poured in 26 points as Greece qualified for the World Championship for the first time in history by coming back from an 11-point deficit to beat Italy 60-56 and take fifth place at the 2009 EuroBasket Women.

    Pelagia Papamichail had 15 points and eight rebounds and Dimitra Kalentzou added 12 points, five rebounds and seven assists for the Greeks, who qualified for the 2010 Worlds in the Czech Republic as well as the 2011 EuroBasket Women in Poland.
