Aija Putnina is a talented forward who can play at both the three or four positions. Putnina spent four years in America - two seasons in a Denver high school and two more at the University of Colorado. During the summers, she was an important part of Latvia's U16, U18 and U20 teams during the European Youth Championships. Last year, Putnina returned to Europe and made her first appearance in the senior national team. During some preparation games, Putnina showed her good shooting skills and great fundamentals near the basket but during the Olympic Games, her performance was limited because of inexperience. After the Olympics, Putnina chose to sign with Olesa Barcelona and spent the season with Liga Femina's fifth best club, averaging 5.4 points and 4.3 rebounds in 18 minutes per game.
