France defeated Romania 72-71 in Timisoara on Saturday to finish their EuroBasket Women Division A campaign with seven wins.

Pierre Vincent's team had already clinched top spot in Group C and sealed their place in next year's Final Round in Latvia and now Les Bleues have ended their summer on a winning note.

Emmeline Ndongue poured in 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the victors.

Romania's Maria Pascalau led all scorers with 21 points, but her team slumped to 1-7 and ended up at the bottom of the group.

The Romanians almost claimed a late victory.

Alexandra Cutas went to the line in the final minute with her team trailing 69-68 but made just one of two to tie the game.

Ndongue hit a jumper with 38 seconds left and after Pascalau missed for Romania, Ndongue extended the French advantage to 72-69 by splitting a pair of free throws.

Cutas made two at the charity stripe for Romania to cut the deficit to 72-71, and Ndongue then turned the ball over to give the home side a chance to prevail with the last shot of the game.

Romania put the ball in the hands of Annemarie Parau but the guard was off target with her jumper.
